Daniel Department Store ‘Mayor’s Charity Evening’
Glamorous models, Champagne, music – it was the perfect way for the Daniel department store to celebrate its 100th birthday, while raising £2,000 for this year’s Royal Borough mayor’s charities.
It all started when the Royal Borough’s mayor and mayoress Cllr John Lenton and Margaret Lenton approached the legendary Windsor store in Peascod Street, to ask if it would host a charity fund raising event for them.
Mrs Lenton said: “When I approached the store I have to admit I did not realise it was their centenary. They were looking for a way of celebrating it and it worked perfectly combining it with a fund raising evening for our charities.”
The Royal Borough’s town crier Chris Brown announced the start of the evening at the front of the store, before a Champagne reception on the ground floor in the furniture department was hosted by the Mayor and Mayoress.
The Windsor Boys and Windsor Girls School Orchestra made music on the escalator to everyone’s delight, while a tombola and raffle raised £2,000 for the mayor’s three charities – the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, Berkshire Community Foundation and Thames Hospice in Windsor.
The glamorous models modelling Daniel’s spring collection were boosted by one brave Daniel staff member, store maintenance assistant Ricardo Silva who had a go himself showing off the best in spring men’s fashions.
The three benefitting charities were all represented. Fiona Devine – the founder with her husband John of Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service which has raised the money for a children’s hospice – was joined by the charity’s patron Sir Michael Parkinson.
She said: “I was so pleased to be invited. Sir Michael came along in support and it was a really fun event that captured the essence of the Daniel family and what they have given to us in this town.” Debbie Raven, chief executive of Thames Hospice was also a welcome guest.
